skin colour. Did you know that she was part Ulster-Scot?\n\nRosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913. She became an activist in the civil rights movement, best known for the Montgomery bus protest of 1955, where she continued to sit in her bus seat when ordered off by the busdriver. In doing this she triggered a lot of civil rights protests for black people. She became known as the \u201cmother of the civil rights movement\u201d.\n\nRosa, in interviews, recognised the Ulster-Scot roots of her maternal great grandfather, James Percival. Probably from Co. Down, he travelled to USA as an indentured servant, before 1860. Incredibly, the 1920 US Census records show that a six year old Rosa Parks was at this time living in the same household as her elderly great-grandfather, believed to be 90 years old at that time.\n\nBut Rosa was more connected to Ulster than she knew. \nOn her paternal (McCauley) side, her great great great grandfather was Capt. Matthew McCauley, who fought in the War of Independence, but who had been born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim in 1750. \n\nMatthew\u2019s wife, Martha Anne, was the daughter of Charles Johnston, born in Tyrone; her mother was Martha Blackwood, from Londonderry. Martha\u2019s maternal grandmother was Mary Craig from Londonderry, born about 1700. McReynolds, the Ulster-Scot who became n<\/span>\n            \t                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ulster-scots.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/instagram-feed\/img\/placeholder.png\" alt=\"Andrew T. McReynolds, the Ulster-Scot who became notable in America for his military leadership, passed away on this day in 1898, aged 89.\n\nAndrew Thomas McReynolds was born in Northland Row, Dungannon, on Christmas Day 1808. He was the son of John McReynolds and Ann Sloan, and through his mother was a cousin of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States of America. \n\nMcReynolds emigrated to New York in 1830, moving to Detroit in 1833.  He began a career in law, and later became known for his military leadership in the Mexican-American War, and in the American Civil War. \n\nAbraham Lincoln personally commissioned McReynolds, as cavalry units were badly needed, thus making McReynolds the only Colonel of United States Volunteers to be personally commissioned by Lincoln.\n\nMcReynolds returned to Michigan to continue his legal career in 1864. The business exported timber to Liverpool as well as trading in imported commodities and agricultural produce. \n\nIn the mid 1830s, Allison converted from his Anglican faith to the Methodist denomination, joining a congregation that had aims to open an educational institution but lacked the appropriate funding. In 1839, Allison solved this problem by purchasing land in Sackville, New Brunswick, and donating \u00a3100 per year for ten years to fund its operation. \n\nSubsequently, the college was named after him. He finished his studies in Delaware before moving to Philadelphia where we was apprenticed as a physician under Benjamin Rush, later a Founding father in his own right. \n\nMcHenry served as a surgeon during the Revolutionary War, where his talents were noticed by George Washington who appointed him an an aide-de-camp, serving as secretary to the commander-in-chief. \n\nHe left the army in the autumn of 1781, when he was elected as a Senator for Maryland. Three years later, he was elected to Congress, and proceeded to be a signatory of the United States Constitution. \n\nIn 1796, during Washington\u2019s second term as President, he appointed McHenry as Secretary of State for War. During his tenure as War Secretary, McHenry is credited above all else with the creation of the US Navy. He continued to serve as War Secretary into John Adams cabinet.\n\nAmong his legacy is Fort McHenry in Baltimore, where during the War of 1812 a battle inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner. At Larne Grammar School, he noticed the difference between the form of English taught there and what was spoken by people from the rural area.\n\nHe went on to study languages at Queen\u2019s University, Belfast, and later in pre-war Germany, before returning to Queen\u2019s for his Masters Degree on the historic phonology of East Antrim Ulster-Scots.\n\nGregg undertook several other language degrees, eventually working on his doctorate at the University of Edinburgh where he studied \u201cThe Boundaries of the Scotch-Irish Dialects in Ulster\u201d.\n\nThrough fieldwork interviewing people across Ulster, Gregg produced the fantastic \u201cGregg maps\u201d, which show the precise geographical boundaries of the Ulster-Scots language and other dialects at this time.\n\nGregg then migrated to Canada, where he became head of the linguistics department of the University of British Columbia in 1972. While in Canada, he helped preserve several endangered languages.\n\nIn 1989, the Department of Education in Northern Ireland commissioned the Concise Ulster Dictionary, and enlisted Gregg as a consultant and editor. The family were originally Presbyterians from Scotland who were forced to leave Ayrshire during the 1640s during the Covenanter struggle, settling in Ulster. \n\nFrom a young age, Thomson showed great mathematical skills, creating sundials as well as a night dial, which allowed the time to be found out by using the positions of the stars. After school, he began to teach at the same school at which he was educated, using his free time to teach himself Latin and Greek. \n\nThis allowed him to enter the University of Glasgow, with a view to becoming a minister, he graduated in 1812 with an MA, after which he continued to take classes in Medicine and Divinity.\n\nIn 1814 Thomson began teaching arithmetic, geography and bookkeeping at the Belfast Academical Institution before becoming professor of mathematics there. While in Belfast he wrote numerous mathematical textbooks which gave him fame as a mathematician across the British isles. As a result, the university of Glasgow gave him an honorary doctorate, and he would go on to be professor of mathematics there from 1832 until his death in 1849.\n\nThomson had seven children. One child, also names James Thomson, would go on to become a civil engineering professor at Queen\u2019s University, Belfast, and later at the University of Glasgow. He emigrated to Canada in 1858, settling in Toronto. In 1869, he opened a wholesale dry goods firm called Sampson, Kennedy and Gemmell.\n\nHe was also involved in several political organisations including the Toronto Board of Trade, the Yorkville and Toronto Christian Temperance Mission, and the Upper Canada Bible Society. He was also secretary of the Toronto Conference of Methodists and a delegate at the 1890 Methodist ecumenical council.\n\nKennedy was elected to Toronto City Council as alderman for St. John\u2019s Ward in 1871. In 1877, he ran for mayor but was defeated by Angus Morrison by around 1,000 votes. He ran again in the 1894 Toronto municipal election for mayor against the incumbent Robert John Fleming. \n\nKennedy received the support of his fellow Methodists and the Women\u2019s Christian Temperance Union, two groups that had previously supported Fleming. Kennedy defeated Fleming by almost 4000 votes, becoming Mayor.\n\nKennedy is not the only Ulster-Scot to have been Mayor of Toronto. Thirty years later, a man named Samuel Mcbride became Mayor. A commemorative plaque at the church in Guillemont records his actions: \n\n\u201cFor most conspicuous bravery and determination. He was wounded in an attack but returned at once to the firing line after having his wounds dressed. Later seeing a hostile machine gun, he dashed out in front of his company, shot the gunner and single handedly captured the gun. Though again wounded, he brought back three prisoners\u201d\n\nPictured, Hughes, still on crutches resulting from his injury, receives the Victoria Cross from HM King George V in Hyde Park in 1917. Sinton employed many people at his mill and treated the employees very well; he built homes for them, and a school (which was to become Ravarnette Primary School) initially met in his farm loft with his wife Eleanor giving a yearly presentation of silver medals for the best pupils in various subjects. \n\nSinton\u2019s brother Thomas also owned several linen mills, at Tandragee and Killyleagh, and is most renowned for building the model village of Laurelvale in County Armagh. His cousin, David Sinton, was for a time one of the wealthiest men in America and whose daughter Anna married the brother of US President William Howard Taft.\n\nJohn Sinton died in Ravarnette in 1890, leaving the business to his son Edwin, who in a partnership ran the Ravarnette Weaving Company with great success by developing a form of linen cloth that was used to cover the fuselage of the earliest aeroplanes. He was named after Andrew Bonar, another Presbyterian minister who was for a time Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly.\n\nLaw left school at 16 and, deciding that university wasn\u2019t for him, set out on a commercial path instead. Arthur\u2019s descent Basil Brooke would go on to become Viscount Brookeborough, the third Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.\n\nThe Brookes were a family of great military pedigree.  James Brooke was an accomplished sportsman and was an outstanding cadet at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, where he won the Sword of Honour.  He enlisted with the Gordon Highlanders, the regiment his Fermanagh-born father had served in. \n\nAt the Battle of Ypres in Belgium in October 1914, the 30-year-old Lieutenant Brooke led two charges toward the enemy under heavy fire, regaining a lost trench and preventing the Germans from breaking through the British line. \n\nHaving secured the position, Brooke went back to bring reinforcements but was hit by enemy fire and killed. But what\u2019s the Ulster-Scots connection?\n\nThe connection comes through the Mathers; father (Increase Mather) and son (Cotton Mather), of strict Puritan stock, who were both prominent in Boston religious and political society. Were they Ulster-Scots? No!\n\nThe Mathers are best known for their involvement in the Salem witch trials of 1692-93, which involved trials and executions. Both Mathers appear to have condemned the deaths but defended the prosecutors.\n\nIn 1718 the Shute Petition was submitted to Massachusetts, asking that Protestants from northern Ulster be allowed to join the colony. Cotton Mather had misgivings, yet his father, Increase, had been encouraging of the Ulster-Scots \u2013 why? Because he had lived and worked amongst them.\n\nIncrease Mather (born in 1639) had attended Harvard College and graduated, aged 17, with a BA. He would later become president of Harvard and achieve the first honorary degree in America. But at 17, he travelled to Trinity College, Dublin, to study for a Masters of Arts. \n\nWhilst there, he was licensed as a Commonwealth minister by Cromwell and sent to Ulster, to care for the areas of Magherafelt and Bellaghy. He had a keen interest in machines, and began work as a mechanic in 1902.\n\nShortly after, Ferguson became amazed by the new development of human flight. With his brother, he developed the Ferguson monoplane in 1909, which was the first heavier-than-air aircraft made in Ireland. \n\nOver the next two decades, Ferguson switched from aviation to agriculture, aiming to create a single unit tractor and plough. Shortly thereafter they moved their homes and practice to Belfast, one which was soon to be one of the largest such clinics in Ireland.\n\nBy the 1880s, carriage wheels were largely made of iron and wood, with solid rubber being used on some bicycles and tricycles. Dunlop, after watching his son struggle riding a tricycle with such solid rubber wheels, sought to find a solution to the problem. In 1887, in the yard of his Belfast home, he fitted an inflated rubber tube to a wooden disc 96cm in diameter and proceeded to conduct tests against the tricycle wheels to promising conclusions. The pneumatic tyres had even better results on bicycles, the first of which is on display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The design was patented in 1888.\n\nTo prove how much better these pneumatic tyres were, he sold a bicycle to William Hume, who went on to win all four events at the Queen\u2019s College Sports competition in Belfast in 1889 and further races in Liverpool. One of the other cyclists in the Liverpool races, William Harvey Du Cros, formed a relationship with Dunlop and set up the company which would go on to be known as Dunlop Ltd, employing over 100,000 people worldwide by the 1970s and making world-leading tyres, golf and tennis equipment, clothing, and much else.\n\nUnknown to Dunlop in 1888, a patent for the pneumatic tyre had been filed by another Scot, Robert William Thomson, over forty years earlier, however this version did not achieve popular practicality. Dunlop died in Dublin in 1921. Sir William Beatty, born in the Waterside district of Londonderry, Ulster, was the ship\u2019s surgeon aboard HMS Victory during the Battle.\n\nAfter the fatal sniper shot on Lord Nelson, it fell to Beatty to examine his injuries, but Nelson knew his fate, saying: \u201cAh, Mr Beatty, you can do nothing for me, I have been shot through the spine.\u201d As Nelson had wished not to be buried at sea, it then became Beatty\u2019s task to preserve Nelson\u2019s body until it could be returned to London. Beatty ordered for the body to be stored in the largest cask they could find, surrounded by Brandy, which adequately preserved the body until Nelson\u2019s state funeral on 9th January.\n\nAfter the Battle, Beatty was appointed physician of the Channel Fleet, and once the Napoleonic Wars had concluded he resumed his medical studies, gaining a second degree from the University of St Andrews and becoming a practising physician until his retirement in 1839. He was knighted by King William IV in 1831 and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1841, Crozier was promoted to Captain and commanded HMS Terror during the four year Ross Expedition to the Antarctic continent.\n\nIn 1845, while once again attempting an expedition to traverse the last unnavigated sections of the Northwest Passage, Crozier and the ships HMS Terror and HMS Erebus vanished along with their entire crews. Many expeditions were carried out over the following decades to find out what happened to the ships and their crew, and in 2016, the HMS Terror, which was commanded by Crozier, was found in a waterway in Nunavut, Canada.\n\nCrozier has a very well regarded legacy; many geographical features in the Arctic and Antarctic are named after him, including Cape Crozier and Crozier Island. His name is also used for a Royal Navy ship, a crater on the Moon, and street names in many places from the Falkland Islands to Australia.
