Robin’s Readings

WG Lyttle is still best remembered for his enduring novel, Betsy Gray, about the 1798 rebellion in Ireland, but he was also a prolific writer of short stories many of which he published in three volumes of Robin’s Readings. These ran to many editions.
Back in 1910, WG’s son, Roland Lyttle, published an omnibus edition of all three volumes which went to a second edition circa 1913. AG Lyttle has now brought out this third omnibus edition as a companion volume to Robin’s Further Readings and Robin’s Rhymes.
WG performed his stories on stage in the broad Ulster-Scots in which they are written. He is reported to have kept his audiences in “roars of laughter” dressed up as his alter-ego, the elderly country farmer, “Robin Gordon of Ballycuddy” who is pictured on the front cover.
Robin’s Readings is a treat for all lovers of Ulster-Scots tales and fans of WG Lyttle, alike.
