If your ancestors came from Ulster, you will want to know about them. Perhaps you are just generally interested in genealogy; you may want names and dates, but if your ancestors came from Ulster, you will feel much more of a pull home. At the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre, we are happy to spend time with you at whatever your level of interest and help you recognise that your ancestors more than faceless names in isolated places.

Visit Us

However, in our Centre we do much more than that; we will help you really understand your Ulster-Scots roots. We will help locating obscure townlands, explaining how land areas have been changed through time, even clarifying for you the complex situation of immigration and emigration.  We will help you immerse yourself in our Ulster-Scots place in history, through the chronicles of Plantation, the tales of townlands, the poetry of the people. We can give you a sense of place, so that every brae and burn, every kirk and knowe, feels connected to your family roots.

We Can Help!

Of course, there are many people living in Northern Ireland who have not had a chance to feel connected to their past either.  If you have ever wondered how your family fitted into history, drop in and we will get you started on some time travel and reawaken your sense of belonging.

Your ancestors are waiting to re-connect with you here, in the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Genealogy is the study of family history and lineage. It involves researching one’s family tree and determining the relationships between ancestors and descendants over multiple generations.

Genealogy helps individuals connect with their roots and understand their family history. It provides a sense of identity and belonging, and helps people understand how they came to be.

Getting started with genealogy research involves collecting information about your family, organizing that information, and then piecing together the relationships between ancestors. We are here to help with this!

Genealogical research can provide a wealth of information, including birth and death records, immigration records, military service records, census records, and much more. It can also reveal information about ancestors’ occupations, where they lived, and where they got married.

Our services are entirely free! As long as you or the ancestor you are researching has links to Ulster-Scots, we can help you carry out your search.
